DexMat makes Galvorn, a next-generation advanced carbon material that delivers what no incumbent material can: conductivity, strength, lightweighting, and flexibility in a single, industrially scalable form factor. Our production at scale is higher-performing, less energy-intensive, and less expensive than today’s most pervasive metals.

Since founding we’ve increased production capacity by 3000x while bringing costs down 99.6%. In 2025 we more than doubled the amount of Galvorn produced and sold—and were named Startup of the Year at Trellis Impact, a global climate tech competition spanning 109 companies across 13 countries.

We're shipping from Houston today to customers in aerospace, defense, wire and cable, and data center infrastructure. Our first Joint Development Agreement with a Tier 1 global wire and cable manufacturer is signed. The next phase is building the commercial pipeline that gets us to offtake. This hire is central to achieving that.

THE ROLE

We're looking for a junior or senior undergraduate student to join DexMat as a part-time Manufacturing & Process Intern, starting as soon as possible or in Fall 2026. Seniors are preferred — ideally, this role runs through your final year and converts to a full-time offer upon graduation. Strong juniors are welcome to apply; we're open to the right person regardless of class year.

Working closely with DexMat's Production Engineer and reporting to the Director of Scale-Up and Manufacturing, you will help plan and execute the downstream end of Galvorn production — converting spun fiber into finished customer products and ensuring every shipment meets specification. This is real production work, not a shadowing rotation. Products you build and verify will ship to actual customers.

Execution is only part of it. We want someone who actively looks for ways to improve what they're doing — whether that means automating a repetitive data step, using AI tools to catch quality patterns earlier, or rethinking how a process is sequenced. If you see something that could be faster, safer, or more reliable, we want you to say so and help fix it.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Own your workstation. Own the output.

Downstream Processing

• Convert spun fibers into finished customer products using twisting, winding, braiding, textile fabrication, and other construction methods

Characterization & Quality

• Perform material characterization and quality verification throughout manufacturing — electrical, mechanical, and dimensional
• Document production data accurately and confirm conformance to internal quality standards before shipment
• Identify and flag out-of-spec results; participate in root cause investigation

Order Fulfillment & Logistics

• Assemble customer orders, prepare packaging, generate shipping labels and documentation
• Coordinate outbound shipments and ensure accurate inventory usage and order traceability

Lab & Facility Upkeep

• Maintain an organized, safe production workspace through routine equipment upkeep, inventory organization, and general housekeeping

Process Improvement

• Proactively identify opportunities to automate repetitive tasks, reduce error, or improve throughput
• Leverage AI and software tools to support data logging, quality pattern recognition, or workflow improvement
• Propose and implement changes; document what works
• Proactively update or optimize SOPs as automation and process improvements are introduced — keeping documentation current with how work is actually done

 

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Hands-on. Curious. Improvement-minded.

• Currently enrolled as a junior or senior undergraduate in materials science, engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related technical field — seniors preferred, but strong juniors will be considered
• Comfortable working hands-on in a production or laboratory environment; prior lab experience is a plus
• Detail-oriented with strong data documentation habits
• Genuine interest in using software, automation, or AI tools to work smarter — you don't need to be a developer, but you should be resourceful
• Able to read and follow technical procedures, specifications, and work instructions
• Self-directed: you notice what needs doing and you do it
• Available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week during the school year and interested in transitioning to full-time after graduation
• Reliable personal transportation to our West Houston facility — the site is not easily accessible by public transit

 

CLARITY

What this role is not.

• A passive observational internship — you will be doing real production work that ships to real customers
• A fit for someone who only wants to be in the lab — shipping, logistics, and facility upkeep are part of this role
• A dead end — strong performers will have a clear path to a full-time offer upon graduation

 

COMPENSATION

Hourly pay. Real experience. A clear next step.

Pay Rate:  $20 per hour

Schedule:  Minimum 20 hours per week during the school year; full availability preferred in summer

Duration:  ~1 year, through graduation. 

Full-Time Path:  Conversion offer available for strong performers upon graduation

LOCATION & REPORTING

On-site. Houston, TX.

This role is based at DexMat's production facility in West Houston, TX. The work is hands-on and requires regular on-site presence — reliable personal transportation is required, as the facility is not easily accessible by public transit. We'll work with your class schedule to build a consistent weekly cadence of at least 20 hours that fits both your academic commitments and our production needs.

This role reports to DexMat's Director of Scale-Up and Manufacturing. Day-to-day, you'll work closely with the Production Engineer — executing the downstream processing plan, flagging issues, asking questions, and contributing ideas as you build context on the process.
